The majority of license holders in the United States enjoy driving. That makes a lot of sense, since it gives you a sense of freedom that makes any commute pleasant. However, traveling along the same route as part of your daily routine can get monotonous. And it doesn’t help that the average person spends 19 work days a year in traffic alone!
The good news is that you can make your daily commute interesting with some neat driving tricks. Here are some safe driving tricks that professional racers use:
Don’t focus on the car ahead
We tend to keep our eyes glued on the car in front of us at all times. But there are a number of reasons why this isn’t safe. When you focus on just one car, you’re more likely to do what they’re doing.
On the race track, that means you’re bound to come second. And while you’re driving on the road, doing so doesn’t give you enough time to apply the brakes if there’s an emergency stop.
So instead of following what the vehicle in front of you is doing, focus on what you can see through their windshield. This will enable you to see how much space the vehicle has kept and if there’s a need to stop.
Push your tongue to the roof of your mouth
This has to be the strangest tip on the list—but it works! The tongue has many nerve endings that allow you to send signals to the part of the brain that’s in control of the body’s balance.
Your reflexes will be much quicker this way, so if you ever need to maneuver the vehicle in a tight situation, you’ll be able to do so.
The 9 and 3 o’clock rule
When driving, the position of your hands on the steering wheel has a major impact. While you may have heard about the 10 and 2 o’clock rule, the 9 and 3 o’clock rule is more comfortable. It’s also better from the perspective of situations when the airbags deploy.
With the 9 and 3 o’clock rule, even if you lose control of the vehicle for a moment, you can get it back in the resting position.
